My six year old self wrote these
words, because I understood
then, the urgency for action.
My journey to Sugar Awareness began before I started school. I loved being outside surrounded by nature, climbing trees, planting flowers and making my own vegetable garden. As I grew, so did my interest and passion for this beautiful planet that we live on.
I remember, one particular day my 6 year old self became so scared listening to environmental activist Greta Thunberg, my school teachers and my parents talking about the importance for action again pollution, the urgency to take care of our planet. It didn't make sense to me that Human Beings would knowingly harm the place we call 'home' and after thinking about how I felt and how I wanted to respond - I came up with this quote - it took my parents by complete surprise;
Nature is Life.
if you Kill Nature, you Kill Life.
if you Kill life, you Kill Yourself.
Now I'm 9 and I hear how this reads, fateful and desperate. Life really did seem simple when I was just 6!
For Youth Health Campions;
My goal is to educate youth on the value
of healthy habits for our body and our planet.
I am beginning to understand the connection of our Planet health and our own Health - how important it is to have fresh food and water. I know the impact of eating foods that are free from refined sugar and to be aware of what I am putting into my body.
My father and grandfather have and had diabetes, a disease caused by poor food choices - putting too much sugar into your body. This disease is preventable, which meant I could make choices now in my young life that would help me as I grow up… and I don’t want diabetes!
So, I started to work with my parents to find out what I could do to not only prevent diabetes but to have a better understanding of the power of food and the difference it can make to our health.
We have so much choice in our world, and a lot of these choices are created by adults with very little information for us children to make good choices for ourselves.
And this is where my inquiry began.
Now, my question is, Just because an adult offers us a choice.. for example to have a manufactured sugar treat, does this mean it is the best option for us?
SO, I became sugar aware and I would like to share this with you, my learning, challenges as well as the benefits of choosing to be a Youth Health Champion!
